Good Reads: Short Stories by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

9/24/2017

Picture
"[Rawlings is] among the first ten American story writers today."--The New Republic, 1940
"She will help to make the American short story a living part of our literature."--Boston Transcript, 1940
"One of the two or three sui generis storytellers we have."--Atlantic Monthly, 1940

In The Yearling, her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of 1939, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote the bleak but noble life of the Florida Cracker into American hearts.  She secured her popularity as a storyteller and her status as a major voice in American literature in 1942 with the instant success of Cross Creek, the autobiographical vignettes that highlight her ability to create short fiction.

Still, no assessment of the full range and power of her talent has been possible without this volume of all twenty-three of her published short stories, collected together here for the first time.  Most appeared in Scribner's Magazine, The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine and the Saturday Evening Post.

Scribner's printed Rawlings's first short story, "Cracker Chidlings," in 1931, just three years after she moved to an orange grove in the backwoods of north-central Florida.  With a mix of frontier morality, ingenuity, and humor, the story introduced readers to Fatty Blake's squirrel pilau and 'Shiner Tim's corn liquor.  Just as important, it brought her work to the attention of Maxwell Perkins, the famous Scribner's editor, who recognized her talent for storytelling and her eye for detail and who encouraged her to capture human drama in more "Cracker" stories.

Though Rawlings was at home in a man's world, much of her short fiction is told in a woman's voice.  She is merciless in "Gal Young 'Un" as she bores in on two women, both competing for the same man and struggling for their dignity.  The story, published in Harper's, was awarded the O. Henry Memorial Prize for best short story of 1932 and was made into a prize-winning movie in 1979.  Her most autobiographical story, "A Mother in Mannville," describes the sense of personal loss endured by a childless woman writer.

Often at her best combining satire and sarcasm, Rawlings wrote a series of comic stories that featured Quincey Dover, her alter ego.  "She is, of course, me," Rawlings wrote, "if I had been born in the Florida backwoods and weighed nearly three hundred pounds."  One story Quincey narrates, "Benny and the Bird Dogs," reportedly amused Robert Frost so much that he fell off a rocking chair in a fit of uncontrollable laughter while listening to Rawlings read from it.

Like others who wrote about the South, Rawlings grappled with the problem of how to portray honestly, yet without racism, the situation and the language of her neighbors.  Her empathetic description of blacks and her portrayal of the Florida Cracker contribute a valuable perspective on twentieth-century American culture in transition.

You are going to pleasantly surprised at this recipe. Packed with so much flavor it is a wonderful dish by itself or on the side of another meal.  All of the delightful herbs come through while baking the second time.  It is utterly amazing!

Lots of add protein in this one due to its added peas, chickpeas, and cashews.

4 large sweet potatoes (about 2 lbs), scrubbed

1½ yellow onion, diced small
1½ red bell pepper, diced small
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 cup frozen or fresh peas
1 cup cooked or canned (and drained and rinsed) chickpeas
1/2 cup toasted cashews
1/2½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
sea salt

Sour "cream"

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Pierce each sweet potato a few times with a fork, then place them on a baking sheet and bake until tender, 45 to 60 minutes.

While the sweet potatoes bake, sauté the onions and bell peppers in a skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the onions turn translucent and start to brown, about 8 minutes. Add the garlic and curry powder and cook for 1 more minute. Add the peas, chickpeas, cashews, and cilantro, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes to marry the flavors.

When the sweet potatoes are tender, let them cool until they are easily handled. Cut each sweet potato in half lengthwise and scoop out all but a ½-inch wall of the flesh. Add the scooped sweet potato flesh to the skillet with the chickpea mixture. Mix well, then season with sea salt to taste.

Spoon the filling into each of the sweet potato halves and place them back on the baking sheet. Bake until the tops of the sweet potatoes start to brown, about 25 minutes. Serve with the Sour “Cream.”

Sour "Cream"

1 (12-ounce) package firm or extra-firm silken tofu
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
Sea salt

Combine the tofu and vinegar in a food processor and process until smooth and creamy. Add salt to taste. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Epsom Salt Baths for Pain Relief

Take a soak.  I can't stress this enough.  Forget the obligations, family demands, and errands.  Make time in your schedule often to soak just as you make time for other priorities in your life.  This must now be included in your schedule frequently to feel relief.

Epsom salt baths are by far one of the best pain strategy reductions for fibromyalgia patients.  I take Epsom salt baths frequently and I believe they're more effective than a hot bath without them.  However, that's not something I can prove or quantitatively measure.  You will have to be your own judge after a few uses.

What we do know is that ingested magnesium is important for your body's energy production (in the form of ATP); that it helps cells form and maintains muscles, bones and nerves; some studies show it helps boost energy and reduces the specific types of pain and tenderness of fibromyalgia.  There is some research that supports magnesium malate for boosting energy and alleviating the pain and tenderness of FMS.

Baking soda allows the body to stay in an alkaline state.  A variety of research has pointed to chronic pain and an acidic body.  By eating a diet rich in alkaline foods, you can reduce your pain levels.  Adding it to your bath gives your body that "aaahhhh" feeling.

Lavendar has been shown to enhance cortisol levels in the body.  Low cortisol levels have been found with individuals afflicted with fibromyalgia.  Take your soaks often and enhance these low levels in your body.

This bath will give you instant results if you are aching.  Why not give it a try and feel relief?

1 cup Epsom Salts
1/2 cup Baking Soda
3-4 Drops of Lavender Oil

Mix Epsom Salts and baking soda in a bowl.  Add lavendar oil and mix well.  Seal in Ziploc bag.  You may begin with a 1/2 cup to a cup in your bath.  Lavendar is well-known for relieving stress.

Hydro Flask for Drinking Containers

I'm in love!  I've been in search of a water bottle that would be safe and eco-friendly for my readers.  Despite my diligent efforts in pre reading product information, I had to send several back.  Then finally it came!  The purple Hydro Flask Acai 40 ounce, or in black,  insulated stainless steel water bottle of true luxury!  Enough to keep water ice cold for eight hours.  Yes, you heard me right, I can take this water bottle with me all day, and still have ice cubes in the container six hours after filling it from the morning!  And, get this, no water bottle sweating since it is richly coated in beautiful insulation.  I picked the larger size as I know I must drink half my weight in water to alleviate symptoms of pain.  If you need a smaller edition there is a 24 ounce container in black, purple, white or blue.  I wouldn't recommend going below those sizes as you know the importance of drinking a good amount of water each day.  For the adventurous there is the 64 ounce container for longer outings.  These can be found at most sporting good stores.

Research has shown that people with fibromyalgia often have zinc, calcium, and magnesium deficiencies - deficiencies that can be supplemented by drinking eight to ten glasses of mineralized water a day. Although many of the other symptoms of fibromyalgia will need more than water to overcome them; drinking
water can help you feel better, and can ease the pain associated with fibromyalgia.

Chronic fatigue syndrome  recovery and fibromyalgia remedies involve taking a hard look at what goes into your body. It even takes overturning a few rocks to discover hidden dangers that can prolong recovery. One of these dangers is bisphenol A (BPA).

New research from the US suggests that people who drink from bottles made of  polycarbonate plastic, such as that used to make hard-plastic drinking bottles  and baby bottles, have a considerably higher level of the chemical bisphenol A  (BPA) in their bodies compared to when they do not.  The finding confirms concerns expressed by consumer groups and public health experts, that polycarbonate plastic bottles are an important source of the BPA that finds its way into the human body. BPA has been shown to interfere with
reproductive development in animals, and has been linked to cardivascular disease and diabetes in  humans, among other things.

BPA is considered an endocrine disruptor because it mimics estrogen, a natural hormone. It can trick the body into causing reactions that are unnecessary and potentially harmful.

Even trace amounts of BPA exposure have been linked to a number of health
problems including:

Obesity
Cancer, including breast cancer
Impaired brain function
Brain and hormone development problems in fetuses and young children
Hyperactivity and impaired learning
Altered immune function
Early puberty and reproductive system abnormalities
Cardiovascular system damage
Resistance to chemotherapy
Liver abnormalities
Spontaneous miscarriages and genetic damage from chromosomal errors
Erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems in men

Picture
In my quest to live a more peaceful lifestyle I've adopted a few vegan style recipes to keep my body well-nourished and at peace.  This recipe can be made in advanced and frozen to take out when a snack or light meal is needed.

1 small onion, diced
6 small garlic cloves, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
6 to 7 cups Vegetable Stock or no oil, low-sodium, store-bought vegetable stock
6 cups fresh or frozen corn kernels (24 oz. frozen)
1 large russet potato, cleaned, i inch dice
1 medium red bell pepper, cored, seeded, 1 inch dice
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme
1/3 cup almond flour
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

In a large stew pot or Dutch oven, place the onion, garlic, and 1½ cups of the vegetable stock. Cover the pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, until the onion is translucent, about 10 minutes.

Add the corn, potato, and 4½ cups of the remaining stock. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until the potato is soft, 10 to 15 minutes.

Transfer half of the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. Return to the pot. Add up to 1 cup stock to adjust the consistency if necessary.

Add the bell pepper, parsley, and thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook for another 10 minutes, until the flavors have blended and the pepper is tender.

Meanwhile, place the flour and 1/3 cup water in the blender and blend until smooth. Stir the almond cream into the chowder. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.

I think the best thing about watching a foreign movie is that it resembles a mini vacation if not only for a couple of hours.  You get to see beautiful countryside that is unlike your own.

  • 80% of FM's are women of working age - can affect all age groups / men / all races / worldwide.
  • 33% of FM's have (TMJ) dysfunction, affecting jaw joints and surrounding muscles.
  • FM has existed throughout history and the world.
  • May require a predisposing factor, possibly inherited, as well as a precipitating factor: trauma, viral infection, stress, history of abuse or neglect, rear-end car accident. Having a baby, difficult surgery, etc.
  • Fibromyalgia is not a form of depression. Depression can be a component of FMS.
  • Not infectious, or many patient's spouses would have it, but don't.
  • FM's are overly sensitive to stimuli (painful) throughout the body.
  • A spouse's snoring will disturb sleep and worsen symptoms .
  • A regular sleep schedule helps.
